Using an Interval Timer

In our Joint Pain Programme studio classes, we use Tabata Timer: Interval Timer to organise movement and rest periods.

Although the app is called a Tabata timer, we use it as a flexible interval timer. You do not need to follow a traditional high-intensity Tabata workout.

Why Use a Timer?

A timer can help you:

  • focus on the movement instead of watching the clock;

  • include regular rest or transition periods;

  • plan a session around the time you have available; and

  • complete a shorter session when you do not have time for a longer one.

You do not need to wait until you have a large block of free time. A short period of movement can still be useful.

A Simple Starting Setup

  1. Choose 3–6 familiar movements.

  2. Set approximately 30–60 seconds of movement.

  3. Allow approximately 20–30 seconds to rest or change position.

  4. Complete one round.

  5. Use PACE to adjust each movement whenever needed.

These timings are examples, not targets. You can use shorter movement periods, take longer rests or stop before the timer finishes.

Remember

The timer organises the session; it does not decide what your body must do.

Choose movements and timings that work for you today.
